THE KING Portrait of an African Lion

"The King" was inspired by a trip to the zoo many, many years ago.  It was a damp, chilly day and the big cats had moved inside for shelter. While the tiger continually paced back and forth and the leopard napped in a hammock, the lion rested quietly on the cement floor gazing through a large window at all the people passing by. He wore an expression of utter confidence and had the regal bearing of a king surveying his territory. When our eyes met for an instant, he seemed to be saying, "You know who is really in charge."

It was important to me to portray the strength and energy of "The King," as well as his calm demeanor. Even though he appears to be at rest, he must be ready to leap into action at any moment, without any fear or hesitation.  He needed a strong statement and acrylics seemed to  be the perfect medium.  I have been using Golden Open Acrylics recently and found them to be a good fit for my "painterly realistic" style.  I like the slightly slower drying time that allows for blending without losing detail.
